The port of Los Angeles: interesting facts

Los Angeles seaport is called “The Port of America”. Taking into account the number of containers and cargo costs in the USA, we can say that this port occupies a leading position within the whole state. Also, this port allows sending and receiving  goods quicker thanks to modernised terminals. The busiest container port has large storage premises. Also, it is the biggest specialised fleet. The port is also connected with the main cargo hubs by the railway. 

Los Angeles seaport is appropriate not only for cargo ships but also for cruise and training ones. There are historical items and museums on the port territory. 

As for its history, the first official documents about the port were issued by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The first trade ship that came into the port in 1805 was called ‘Lelia Bryd’. The port was officially created at the beginning of the XX century. It happened because of the growing population. During the Second World War, ship, renovation, and shipbuilding works were performed there. At the end of the 1950s container revolution happened, and it made the loading and unloading processes quicker. Logistics was getting better, and the safety of cargo was getting higher.  Since that time the development of the Port of Los Angeles has started. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007.

Many transportation companies that offer full truck load services sometimes cooperate with The Port of Los Angeles. It is situated not far from Los Angeles downtown. As for the port structure, it consists of 27 terminals, 270 berths, and more than 80 high-power cranes, and thousands of feet of railway. Some of the 27 terminals are specialised for vehicles. There are also four terminals for bulky cargo. There are eight terminals for containers, three for dry materials, and seven for liquid materials. The Port of Los Angeles has two passenger terminals.

The port is also a popular tourist attraction. Some objects are included in the list of historical places in California.The first is Angels Gate Lighthouse. It was built in 1913 by a unique project. In 1973 the lighthouse was automated. Its light is green, and this feature differentiates this lighthouse from the rest. The base of the construction is made from stainless steel.

Council depot has worked since 1917. It was the only customs warehouse for a long time. It also played a major role when Los Angeles entered the international trade markets. There is a viewing platform near the warehouse. It is called Warehouse One Outlook and offers one of the most breathtaking views of the bay.

Cargo ship Lane Victory remains from the time of the Second World War. It was renovated as a monument for the trade fleet and soldiers who died in the sea. Today the ship is served by volunteers, who are military veterans. The ship is free for visitors. 

The territory of the seaport is an ideal place for open-air events. Concerts, festivals, and sports competitions usually take place there. At the beginning of September, there is a big celebration of Labor Day. Visitors can see an open-air exhibition of military techniques and take part in different programs.
